For the first time in over a decade, the Public Employees Association (PEA) has officially rejoined Public Services International (PSI)—a significant milestone for our union. PSI is a Global Union Federation comprising over 700 trade unions and representing more than 30 million workers across 154 countries. The organization advocates for workers’ rights and universal access to quality public services, while representing its members at international platforms such as the UN, ILO, and WHO.
PEA is now a fully-fledged financial affiliate of PSI, reaffirming our commitment to global solidarity and the collective advancement of workers' rights. This September, PEA was represented by Mr. Abraham Matafolu at the 15th Asia Pacific Regional Conference (APRECON) held in Kathmandu, Nepal from 8th – 11th September 2025.
Held every five years, APRECON is the region's largest gathering of PSI affiliates, providing a critical platform to review progress, share strategies and struggles, and adopt a new Regional Work Plan. This year’s conference brought together 250 registered delegates from 25 countries, all representing workers in public service sectors, alongside PSI's partner organizations and allies.
PEA's General Secretary, Mr. Ugwalubu Mowana, emphasized the importance of the union's return to PSI at this time, stating:
“PEA’s participation in APRECON signifies that we are not alone in our fight for quality public services—both at the national and global levels. The need for international solidarity has never been more urgent.”
In recognition of PEA’s renewed commitment, PSI General Secretary, Mr. Daniel Bertossa, welcomed the union in an official letter, stating: “Your union has full PSI rights and entitlements for voting and participation in PSI activities.”
PEA looks forward to contributing actively to PSI's global initiatives and strengthening alliances that promote and defend the rights of public service workers everywhere.
